Five Quick Wedding Design Tips

Wedding Design Tips from a Charlotte-based Wedding Planner that will help elevate any wedding no matter the size or the budget

At Heatherly, we believe that cohesion in a wedding’s design creates an ease and flow to the overall day which in turn leaves guests feeling a sense of enjoyment after all is said and done. Elevate the look of your wedding, with five design tips that can be implemented regardless of the scope of your wedding.

  1. Don’t purchase on a whim: Before diving into the specifics of decor and purchasing one-off items from Homegoods or the local facebook marketplace, it's essential to establish a cohesive theme for your wedding. Your theme will serve as the foundation for all design decisions, from color palettes to floral arrangements. Additionally, while you may think you’re getting a deal on decor items, you may actually be spending more when you find out your florist, for example, already has vases included in her pricing or that the venue, for example, comes with tealight votives.

  2. No matter what food service style you are choosing, opt to fully set your tables. “But wait,” I’m having a buffet. Still, set your tables. “But I told my catering team that I want to set the tables fully, and they said no because we are having a buffet.” Push back. Request that you set the tables even if it means putting plates out on the tables and an additional set of plates up at the buffet.

  3. Focus on Lighting: Lighting can make or break the ambiance of your wedding venue. Opt for soft, warm lighting to create a romantic atmosphere that sets the mood for the evening. Every table should have some form of candlelight. Remember, your florist’s proposal likely includes candles.

  4. Play with Textures and Fabrics: Texture adds visual interest and depth to your wedding decor, elevating the overall aesthetic of your venue. Experiment with different textures and fabrics such as velvet, lace, or chiffon to create dimension and contrast. Incorporate textured elements into your tablescapes, ceremony backdrop, and even your wedding attire for a sophisticated and luxurious look that captivates the senses.

  5. Pay Attention to Details: It's often the little details that make the biggest impact on your wedding design. Pay close attention to details such as table linens, place settings, and floral arrangements to ensure a polished and cohesive look. Consider incorporating unexpected elements like escort card displays, personalized menus, or signature cocktails to surprise and delight your guests. Remember that thoughtful touches go a long way in creating a memorable and visually stunning wedding experience.

  6. BONUS: don’t use faux florals. While this may be a strong opinion rather than fact, I challenge you to find a celebrity who opted for fake. Why? Because when the budget is not a question (and assuming no allergies are involved), live/fresh florals are always the better choice. They photograph better than faux and bring an overall higher-end look to your design. If budget is in fact an issue, first look for a florist who does not require a minium. Next, provide your florist with your budget and styleboards and ask them what they would do with the budget. A talented florist can maximize the use of fresh florals in a way that will never have you thinking of faux again.

Incorporating these design tips into your wedding planning process will help you create a breathtaking celebration that reflects your unique love story and leaves your guests in awe. Whether you're in need of start-to-finish assistance or simply a quick call to discuss one or two design elements, Heatherly Event Design can help you bring your story to life.
